City of Little Rock - Fire Station No. 6

Cromwell was asked to investigate the sinking structural slab at the Little Rock Fire Station No. 6. Working with a geotechnical engineer, Cromwell’s structural engineering department determined that the fire station’s foundation was placed on highly plastic soils. This causes the floor to sink, but since the walls and roof are supported by a separate deep foundation system, they remain constant. This issue required further study, so it was recommended that a bench mark be placed in a nearby open field to gauge the movement of the top of the foundation wall and see if there is continual shrink/swell activity.
