Air National Guard
Operations and Training Building
Little Rock Air Force Base, AR
The purpose of this facility design was to replace the 1960’s metal building
that
housed the Wing Command, Mission Support Group, Finance, Chaplain and the Judge
Advocate General, with a new state-of-the-art facility that is architecturally
compatible with the surrounding environment. The objective was to provide maximum
natural light to the facility and its occupants, access to unit members, and
a distinctive office environment worthy of a Wing Commander and his staff, while
also complying with the requirements of the DoD Force Protection Criteria.
The facility relates to its surroundings by incorporating the base standard
brick and roofing as well as incorporating design details from nearby facilities
in a unique application. A curved loggia and entrance gable with the Air National
Guard crest in a brick relief combined with the entrance terrace with a six-foot
tall Minuteman statue all come together to create a dramatic entrance statement
for the Air National Guard Campus and welcome visitors to the Air National Guard
portion of Little Rock Air Force Base.
In the lobby area, the epoxy terrazzo flooring has an inlay of the crest of
the 189th Airlift Wing, utilizing the precise color scheme approved by the United
States Army Department of Heraldry. The building incorporates an interior courtyard,
which brings natural light to the interior offices contained within the facility.
The loggia was used in lieu of enclosed hallways at the courtyard, taking advantage
of the favorable weather at Little Rock AFB and helping building occupants connect
to the environment during the day.
