Air Force Academy Commissary
Colorado Springs, CO
This 68,500 SF Design - Bid - Build commissary was designed according to the Academy Master Plan and the architectural compatibility guidelines which allow the use of only the International Style of architecture. The building was constructed using brick veneer exterior masonry and steel frame. Because of the slope of the site, the building is tucked into the hillside which also serves to obscure views of the truck service area. The building is composed of three major areas which are articulated by the building's exterior design: the sales area, the food processing area and the warehouse. Long-span strusses span the sales area. Located between the trusses are insulated translucent clerestories which admit natural daylight into the shopping area and provide a bright and cheerful environment. Project includes large humidity controlled sales area, food preparation area, dry and semi-perishable food warehouse areas, refrigerated food storage, receiving dock area and administrative offices. Site work for the project includes customer parking for 270 cars, sidewalks, landscaping and the extension of utilities needed to support the building.
This project was the winner of a U.S. Air Force Concept Merit Award.
