Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church
Little Rock, AR
This project provides a three- story addition of 38,000 square feet to the
existing church facility. Its design includes an
elevated
parking deck tucked into the slope of the site. The new buildings form an entrance
motor court in the center of the facility and provide enhanced at-grade access
to the facility. Located in the central Little Rock neighborhood of Hillcrest,
the project required extreme sensitivity in response to neighborhood concerns
for maintaining the low scale traditional residential fabric of the area. At
the same time, the programmatic demands required maximum use of the church property.
This project is the first phase of a three-phase master plan that envisions
future additions for congregational gathering and church offices.
Although the project takes the place of existing surface parking, the addition
actually increases the facility's parking capacity, while at the same time maintaining
a neighborhood compatible presence. The new addition provides rooms for the
expanding children's programs, youth programs and a 400-seat multipurpose room
complete with an up-to-date audiovisual system (to be used for contemporary
worship services). In addition, the project includes a labyrinth in the floor
of the multipurpose room and a columbarium.
The exterior design of the addition is executed in the Gothic manner of the
existing church utilizing brick and cast stone dressings, buttresses, two-centered,
three-centered and lancet arches.
