Blown Away: Maintaining Hospital Operations During Redesign and Rebuilding

On September 12, Charley Penix and Joe Hilliard presented “Blown Away: Maintaining Hospital Operations During Redesign and Rebuilding,“ a webinar for the 2013 Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo.

In February 2008, a tornado destroyed most of the hospital in Mountain View, AR. With only the surgical wing salvageable for reuse, the design team was challenged to resolve several issues:

  • Immediate analysis of facility to determine what was salvageable and safe for continued occupancy.
  • Quickly provide support required for temporary structures to house hospital’s on site operations during design and construction of replacement facilities.
  • Assess value of damage to insure adequate insurance reimbursement for replacement building.
  • Justify higher costs required for enlarged facilities necessary to meet current hospital standards, codes, state health department regulations, ADA requirements, etc.
