The project includes construction of a 127,620 SF Commissary (119,255 SF first floor + 5,923 SF 2nd floor admin area + 4,886 SF canopy at entrance). The primary function of the facility is to provide sales and processing of miscellaneous commodities and grocery items for the military community of the Base and their dependents. The building is designed to be compatible with the mission style architecture in the San Diego area. Spanish clay tile roofs and a decorative colonnade along the entrance facade welcome patrons to the store. It is also the largest stand-alone commissary that DeCA has ever constructed.
The new commissary includes areas for Sales, Non-perishable and Refrigerated Food Storage, Food Processing, Staging and Receiving and Administrative Areas. The administrative area has been located on a second floor due to the limited size of the site. Sales and administrative areas are air-conditioned. An outdoor sales area is provided on the south side of the building. Also included is a "Grab-n-Go" Store (small convenience type store) with its own entrance. Rooftop refrigeration, mechanical and electrical centers provide a turn-key solution for these major items. Underslab utilities have been minimized to provide maximum flexibility for future alterations. The project also includes a secure truck service dock area.
The project is designed to meet SPiRiT “Bronze” rating, and utilizes natural daylighting in the sales area and warehouse. Innovative stained concrete floors are being utilized for the public and administrative areas, saving money and providing a long lasting, low maintenance, durable floor. The east exterior wall is designed to withstand a bomb blast at 33', and the entire facility is designed to comply with the latest requirements set forth in the Unified Facilities Criteria for Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection. The store will incorporate the latest DeCA Decor package, and is the flagship for the new interior appearance that will be utilized on future stores. CID and SID interior design packages and fixture placement design are also included in this project.
